Based on a True Story is an interactive mixed‑media project created by three emerging creatives with a shared commitment to exploring women’s safety through storytelling. Drawing inspiration from real events, the project examines the everyday fears, pressures, and threats women face in both public spaces and online environments. Its primary aim is to raise awareness of experiences that are often normalised, overlooked, or minimised, despite being a persistent reality for women worldwide.
Rooted firmly in truth, the project is informed by real‑life testimonies, verified statistics, and peer‑reviewed research, ensuring that its narrative and themes are both authentic and responsible. The work is presented as a physical installation featuring two non‑linear interactive stations, each recreating distinct experiences commonly faced by women. One station uses audio‑immersive visuals to depict the internal dialogue and precautions associated with walking alone at night, while the other is a fully coded Instagram replica that places users directly in the position of receiving online harassment.
Through immersive interaction, Based on a True Story invites empathy, reflection, and dialogue around women’s safety in contemporary society.
